Neighborhood-scale townhomes bring much needed housing to Salem
The Portland Road Townhomes are designed to be well suited to their location in Salem, Oregon, responding to both the area’s housing demands and demography. The development consists of 72 market-rate townhome units, along with a 6,000 square foot retail building.

Traditional in style, the townhomes feature gable roofs and a combination of lap and board-and-batten siding. Variations in color and pattern help to break up the development’s massing, giving the homes a smaller feel and neighborhood scale.
Each family-sized townhome was designed to be efficient yet open, with large windows to bring in light and maximize residents’ views. The 3-bedroom and 2.5-bath homes are arranged in three different floorplans with varying square footage.
Outdoor amenity areas throughout the site, such as an open park space slated to become a future playground, encourage healthy living and build connections within the community. Nearby, a covered pavilion with a neighboring grassy field offers space for sheltered gatherings.
When designing the adjacent retail building, flexibility was top-of-mind for Scott Edwards Architecture. Integral color masonry, whose color won’t fade or chip away, and steel canopies lend themselves to a timeless design, with versatile space for up to three separate tenants. At the westernmost tenant space, the option for a drive-through pickup window demonstrates the future potential of the development.
This project is under construction and scheduled for completion in 2026.
