Habitat for Humanity Dundee Commons

Community partnership inspires family-focused development

In Dundee, Oregon, three community partners are working together to address housing security, access to early childhood education, and neighborhood connection through one standout development. Dundee Commons, a project spearheaded by Newberg Area Habitat for Humanity, is a mixed-use development combining affordable housing and a daycare center providing free early childhood education to both Dundee and nearby Newberg, Oregon.

An outdoor, shared community porch overlooking the daycare play yard connects the family-sized, second floor units to the site's activity.

The development is comprised of six affordable condo units situated over a 3,100 square foot daycare facility, leased to project partner Head Start of Yamhill County. These second-floor condo units consist of three 2-bedroom and three 3-bedroom homes. A seventh, ADA accessible 1-bedroom condo unit is located on the ground floor, complete with a private patio.

Inside the day care center, a comprehensive educational environment takes shape, supporting the community with family-focused programming built to serve the needs of low-income families with children under five.

In addition to partner Head Start of Yamhill County, Dundee Commons was made possible through collaboration with the site's neighboring church. The design demonstrates this partnership through a palette and vernacular that reflect the historic church in white shingle cladding and gable rooflines. Circulation and connection throughout the site weave together the daily lives of the residents, daycare patrons, and churchgoers alike.
