Sherwood Food Cart Hall
The adaptive reuse of a church into a community hub
This historic church in downtown Sherwood, Oregon is being reimagined as a vibrant food and beverage hall. Approached through adaptive reuse, Scott Edwards Architecture’s design transforms the 0.7-acre site's “little white church” into a community hub while honoring and preserving its existing character. Inside, the church's nave becomes a dining hall, and the alter is converted into bar that serves as the development's centerpiece and anchor.
A new covered deck acts as a central spine along the length of the property, connecting the dining hall to outdoor gathering spaces, including an outdoor deck with seating, firepit lounge, and space for up to nine food carts. The design also embraces other existing elements of the site, such as its old-growth Douglas fir tree. An elevated, treehouse-inspired deck is integrated around the tree, offering a unique gathering space with views over the property. The development breathes new life into the church and surrounding area, providing a new type of commercial amenity primed to become a beloved community asset in the coming years.
