Multnomah County Rockwood Community Health Center

Health center renovation prioritizes function, elevates experience

The Multnomah County Rockwood Community Health Center provides medical, dental, and pharmacy care to its Portland neighborhood. After long-time tenancy in the space, the county purchased the property, and in 2022, worked with Scott Edwards Architecture to perform a building assessment. The assessment identified deferred maintenance and desired functional upgrades for clinic operations, charting a path forward for the renovation. As part of the design process, SEA and Multnomah County collaborated to identify guiding values, determine diverse user groups, establish sustainability goals, investigate site plan opportunities, and explore multiple options for the new public-facing entry vestibule, lobby, and reception areas. Infrastructure upgrades include new rooftop air handlers, roof, emergency lighting, security camera upgrades, exterior building maintenance, and sewer line upgrades. The architectural approach balances safety and trauma-informed design and incorporates sustainability goals within the context of the project budget.
