The design is inspired by the planting grid of the adjacent orchards and the dramatic landscape of the Columbia River Gorge. A curved retaining wall follows the natural contour of the site, carving back the hillside to create space for the house and detached garage and studio. The exposed wood-and-steel structures nestle into the slope and play off the wall to create protected outdoor spaces. The house is organized into three parts: a guest wing, a central great room, and a master wing. The linear floor plan maximizes views of Mount Hood with rooms to the south and circulation to the north. Glass sliding doors open the great room up to the view and back courtyard for indoor-outdoor living. Landscape design by PLACE Studio.
