In a few short years, Anaheim has quickly established itself as Orange County’s craft-beer capital. Golden Road Brewing’s sprawling new facility, which has a soft opening Saturday, Nov. 18, is destined to be its most visible symbol.

But some craft-beer aficionados might take issue with its “craft” status.

Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, a longtime fan of the frosty mug, has actively supported his city’s burgeoning craft beer scene, lowering regulatory barriers and making it easier for small breweries to get up and running. This year, the term “small” began to seem passé. In September, the Towne Park Brewery & Taproom opened in west Anaheim. With 20,000 square feet and a 20,000-barrel annual output, it instantly became one of Orange County’s largest craft breweries.

It didn’t take long for an even more ambitious newcomer to eclipse Towne Park. Golden Road Brewing, a popular Los Angeles label since its founding in 2011, has spent three years planning and building a temple of beer, food and recreation on Orangewood Avenue across from Angel Stadium. Many beer fans already know the spot. A 600-square-foot temporary tasting room has been open since February 2016.

The 40,000-square-foot indoor-outdoor facility houses 40 rotating taps at its cavernous indoor restaurant and, when fully built out next spring, another 80 taps at its outdoor bars. An on-site brewery is home to Golden Road’s spirit-inspired barrel program. Award-winning brewmaster Victor Novak also has created something he calls “the brewer’s playground.” Novak is familiar to many local beer geeks who became avid fans during his time at Brea’s TAPS Fish House & Brewery and other Orange County beer producers before he moved to Golden Road in 2014.

The small-production facility allows him to tinker with a variety of beer recipes.

“This is where our talented brewers will make new beers and test them on the market,” said Novak during a tour of the facility.

Novak, who specializes in classic European beers, said he’s happy to be back in Orange County. He spent 15 years working at TAPS, so he’s been with the Orange County beer scene since its early stages.
